Mystery of Prayer Explained

It is often said there are no atheist in foxholes. Could their cry for help be caused by fear? Is it an expression of Nature for humans and even many animals to cry for help when we feel the pangs of fear or pain? Who among us, when suddenly confronted with terror or danger will not cry out “Oh My God.” It is normal for humans to ask for help from our God when we are lost or afraid with a challenge we do not understand. Isn’t this a form of PRAYER?

How many times in your life have you asked or pleaded with your God to intercede with a solution to a challenge because it is something you feel you want or need? Have you asked for money or riches, physical cures, a change in your environment, a new job, etc? Like a child asking a benevolent parent for a new toy which you want but don’t need. When we don’t get what we want we lose faith in the power of Prayer because it seems so many of our Prayers are not answered. Then maybe a helpful parent has told us not to blame God that we need to understand NO is an answer. All we need to learn is how to pray affectively.

If praying for our wants were not true why is “treasure mapping” and “visualization” so successful? Because these two techniques are a form of positive Prayer which when invoked always end with the affirmation; “if it be for my highest good, let it be done.” In addition you are accessing the Physician Within and acknowledging that you want to be guided by whatever is for your highest good and allows you to remain on the path of your Divine Life Plan. The techniques of “treasure mapping” and “visualization” are very powerful positive techniques as long as we realize the objective is for our highest good.

Once we accept that God is NOT a “fix it” Lord, but a benevolent parent who wishes only positive circumstances for his child in which his needs have already been supplied. One of the greatest blessings he has also provided us with is that of all the animals we are the only one who has a FREE WILL, to travel their path of life along a road we have chosen which will best accomplish the purpose for which we were given the blessings of life.

The essence of accessing the Physician Within should be GUIDED by what your Divine path is, and to give THANKS for the blessings, which, you have already received. So all Prayer (the communication with the God of your understanding) must first be an acknowledgement to open the channel of communication, then a statement of thanks for the fact we have already received whatever it is we need. We just need the guidance to accept the blessings of our highest good – not what we feel we want or need. For the God of our understanding already knows and has provided what we need to accomplish the mission for which we have been given life.

So lets take a look at the mechanics of Prayer beginning with the biblical references. The Lord’s Prayer; Matt;6:9. However, before paragraph 9, St. Matthew has some important information on how to pray beginning with Matt; 6:5, as follows in the Lamsa translation, from the original Aramaic ancient text:

5. And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, who like to pray, standing in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you that they have already received their reward.
6. But as for you, when you pray, enter into your inner chamber and lock your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret shall himself reward you openly.
7. And when you pray, do not repeat your words like the pagans, for they think that because of much talking they will be heard.
8. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need, before you ask him;
9. Therefore, pray in this manner: Our Father which art in heaven……..

So when you pray, don’t ask or partition the God of your understanding for wants, but ask only for guidance to solve the challenges you are being tested with. Then give thanks, for what you seek is already provided. While you are with the Physician Within be sure to be quiet so you can hear that still small voice within you. There is no power if you do not listen.

Og Mandino, author and motivational speaker, has a prayer he calls the Salesman’s Prayer which fits all the essentials of a successful prayer to the God of your understanding. If you are not a salesman substitute your profession for salesman – it will work in any situation. I have the prayer, read by Og Mandino on CD and play it every morning after I go within to raise the protective shield that goes with me each day. Following is that prayer:

Oh creator of all things, help me. For this day I go out into the world naked and alone, and without your hand to guide me I will wander far from the path which leads to success and happiness.

I ask not for gold or garments or even opportunities equal to my ability; instead, guide me so that I may acquire ability equal to my opportunities.

You have taught the lion and the eagle how to hunt and prosper with teeth and claw. Teach me how to hunt with words and prosper with love so that I may be a lion among men and an eagle in the market place.

Help me to remain humble through obstacles and failures; yet hide not from mine eyes the prize that will come with victory.

Assign me tasks to which others have failed; yet guide me to pluck the seeds of success from their failures. Confront me with fears that will temper my spirit; yet endow me with courage to laugh at my misgivings.

Spare me sufficient days to reach my goals; yet help me to live this day as though it be my last.

Guide me in my words that they may bear fruit; yet silence me from gossip that none be maligned.

Discipline me in the habit of trying and trying again; yet show me the way to make use of the law of averages. Favor me with alertness to recognize opportunity; yet endow me with patience which will concentrate my strength.

Bathe me in good habits that the bad ones may drown; yet grant me compassion for weaknesses in others. Suffer me to know that all things shall pass; yet help me to count my blessings of today.

Expose me to hate so it not be a stranger; yet fill my cup with love to turn strangers into friends.

But all these things be only if thy will. I am a small and a lonely grape clutching the vine yet thou hast made me different from all others. Verily, there must be a special place for me. Guide me. Help me. Show me the way.

Let me become all you planned for me when my seed was planted and selected by you to sprout in the vineyard of the world.

Help this humble salesman.
Guide me, God.

While prayer is a private relationship between you and your God, many feel that recruiting more advocates to your cause will help to convince God of the value of your partition.
